A neighborhood gathering in Trenton turned deadly overnight, leaving two people dead and nine others wounded in one of the city’s most serious shootings this year.
It happened just after midnight Sunday on Locust Street, where a large crowd had gathered Saturday evening and remained into the night.
Then came the gunfire.
Trenton police were called to the 100 block of Locust Street around 12:25 a.m. for reports of multiple shots fired. By the time officers arrived, 11 people had been shot.
Two victims were killed. Nine others were rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center.
The violence sent investigators across Locust Street, where nearly 40 evidence markers could be seen scattered along the ground Sunday morning.
The investigation also stretched to the hospital. Police taped off an entrance to Capital Health, roughly two miles from the shooting scene, and a visibly damaged vehicle near the emergency room was later towed away.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora described the gathering as unauthorized and estimated that more than 200 people had been there.
Now investigators are trying to determine what turned that gathering into a deadly shooting.
Police have not announced a motive, identified any suspects or made any arrests. The identities of the two people killed have also not been released.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is investigating.
