A 20-year-old woman from Brick Township has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her 2-year-old brother in the chest Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Police responded around 2:30 p.m. to a home on Burke Lane, where they found the child seriously injured. He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center and is in stable condition.

Investigators identified the suspect as Marlene Rodriguez, the child’s sister. She was arrested and taken to the Ocean County Jail, pending a detention hearing.

Rodriguez faces charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
