A routine inspection turned tragic — and Camden lost a firefighter just months from retirement.
Veteran Camden firefighter Howard Bennett died after falling into the icy Delaware River during a fire boat inspection at Wiggins Park on Thursday.
Bennett, 60, had nearly 27 years of service and was known as the department’s boating expert — nicknamed “MacGyver” for his ability to fix anything.
He fell into the river around 11 a.m. and was submerged for about 30 minutes before being rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“He was family,” city leaders said. Firefighters stood at attention as his body was transported — a powerful reminder of the risks first responders face, even during routine duties.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating. A fundraiser has been launched to support Bennett’s wife and family.
🕊️ Rest in service. Camden will remember.
