The event occurred on the Garden State Parkway late Thursday evening.
Details are scarce, but preliminary reports indicate that around 11:30 p.m., Cranford Police engaged in a pursuit that ended with a vehicle crashing southbound near exit 131 on the Parkway in Woodbridge.
In the aftermath of the collision, gunfire erupted, leading to a Cranford police officer being struck in the arm.
The officer was immediately transported to University Hospital, though his condition remains unconfirmed.
At least one individual was injured in the shooting though it was unclear if their injuries were fatal. It was not until a later report confirmed suspect is dead.
The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 12:04 a.m. on December 29. A firearm was discovered near the driver's body.
During the exchange, one officer was shot but sustained non-fatal injuries.
