CROSSING GUARD ASSAULTED IN BLOOMFIELD: SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER ATTEMPTED STABBING

On the morning of December 19, a crossing guard in Bloomfield was assaulted by a man who attempted to stab her with a pen. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Glenwood and Llewellyn Avenues.

Witnesses identified the assailant as Demitrius Childs, 32, of East Orange. Bystanders intervened during the attack, preventing any injuries to the crossing guard. Childs fled the scene toward Watsessing Park but was apprehended by responding officers near the park. He resisted arrest and attempted to disarm an officer before being subdued. One officer sustained injuries during the altercation and was treated at Mountainside Hospital.

Childs faces charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest/eluding and has been transferred to Essex County Correctional Facility.

The Bloomfield Police Department continues to investigate the incident. Mayor Jenny Mundell acknowledged the event, emphasizing the importance of community safety.
