A quiet South Plainfield street turned tragic before sunrise after a house fire claimed one life.

Just before 5 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to a home on Cedarbrook Avenue after reports of a structure fire. When crews entered the house, they found an adult man unresponsive on the upper level.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other adults inside the home escaped and suffered minor injuries. Three first responders were also injured while battling the flames and were treated and released.

The victim’s identity has not been released as officials notify the family. The cause of death will be determined following an autopsy by the Middlesex County Regional Medical Examiner. Investigators say the fire does not appear suspicious at this time.

A joint county and state fire investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward as they work to determine what caused the blaze.
