A massive search is underway after two 10-year-old children disappeared in the Passaic River on Wednesday evening, according to Passaic officials.

Mayor Hector Lora said a 10-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl remain missing after entering the river near Pulaski Park around 6:30 p.m.

Officials say three children entered the water, including the missing boy, the missing girl, and the boy’s older sister. A good Samaritan jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue them but was unable to reach the children because of the strong current and deep water.

The older sister was able to make it out of the river safely on her own and was reunited with her family. She is expected to be OK.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies are searching the river using boats, drones, and other specialized equipment.

Mayor Lora said the Passaic River is running higher than normal following Tuesday’s heavy storms, making rescue efforts even more challenging.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
