GUTTENBERG (Hudson County) — What started as a simple traffic stop quickly escalated into a major arrest Tuesday morning.

Police say an officer spotted a driver using his phone behind the wheel near 68th Street and Kennedy Boulevard around 8:38 a.m. — but the stop uncovered much more.

Authorities identified the driver as Javier Martinez-Moncada, 41, of North Bergen, who was also found to have an active warrant out of Guttenberg Municipal Court.

During the arrest, officials say Martinez-Moncada told officers he had a firearm inside the vehicle.

That led to a search — and the discovery of a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun with a high-capacity magazine, according to police.

Investigators confirmed he did not have a valid firearms ID or concealed carry permit in New Jersey.

He’s now facing multiple serious charges, including:

  • Unlawful possession of a weapon
  • Possession for an unlawful purpose
  • Certain persons not to have weapons
  • Firearms regulation violations

He was also issued a summons for using a phone while driving.

Martinez-Moncada was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Center, where he’s being held pending court.

Police officials praised the officer’s actions, calling it proactive work that removed an illegal weapon from the streets.
