Years ago, she was his fifth-grade teacher in Middle Township. On Oct. 28, in a Cape May County courtroom, she pleaded guilty to a crime involving that former student.
Laura Caron, 36, of Cape May Court House, pleaded guilty in Superior Court to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced Oct. 30.

Caron taught the boy in fifth grade at Middle Township Elementary School No. 2. Prosecutors alleged she had a sexual relationship with him between 2016 and 2020, while he was living at her home. She gave birth to his child in 2019, when he was 13, according to prosecutors.
Investigators said the case surfaced in December 2024. Caron was arrested and charged on Jan. 15, 2025, with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. A grand jury indicted her on June 17, 2025.
When she was charged, Sutherland framed the case as a betrayal of a teacher's role. "Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust," he said.
The young man at the center of the case has told it differently. In February 2025, at 19, he told the Daily Mail: "They need to drop all charges. I wasn't groomed or raped or manipulated by her. She never initiated anything."
Her guilty plea is now the legal record.

Under the plea agreement, Caron faces five years in New Jersey State Prison, the prosecutor's office said. She must forfeit her teaching license and give up any future public employment. She will also register under Megan's Law and remain under parole supervision for life.
Before she serves her sentence, Caron will be evaluated at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel to determine whether her conduct was repetitive or compulsive, a finding that could affect her sentence, according to the prosecutor's office.
Sentencing is set for Jan. 8, 2027, before Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Waldman, provided the Avenel evaluation is complete. Caron pleaded to a single second-degree count, and the prosecutor's office has not said what will happen to the more serious charges in the indictment.
