JERSEY CITY TEACHER CONVICTED OF SEX CRIMES AGAINST 12-YEAR-OLD STUDENT

A Hudson County jury has convicted a former Jersey City teacher of sexually abusing a 12-year-old student, prosecutors announced Monday.

Apparao Sunkara, 72, of Hicksville, Long Island, was found guilty of sexual assault by contact, endangering the welfare of a child, and official misconduct following a multi-week trial, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors said that between September 2019 and January 2020, Sunkara engaged in sexual acts with the victim while employed at Infinity Institute, a selective-admissions public middle and high school in Jersey City.

Sentencing is set for December 12, where Sunkara faces Megan’s Law sex offender registration, lifetime parole supervision, and a potential lengthy prison term.
