Long Beach Township police stopped 38 drivers during a crosswalk safety detail that put undercover officers in the role of pedestrians.

Police said the Cops in the Crosswalk operation ran for four hours on August 4. Officers in plain clothes crossed at marked crosswalks while marked patrol vehicles stopped drivers who failed to yield.

The detail matters for residents and Shore visitors because police identified several areas where pedestrians face safety concerns, including crossings along Long Beach Boulevard, Ocean Boulevard and Bayview in Barnegat Light.

So far, police said the operation resulted in 38 traffic stops and one warrant arrest. The department said the special detail supplements regular crosswalk enforcement by officers on patrol.

Police said similar safety work will continue and urged drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to stay alert and obey traffic laws through the summer season.
