NEWARK, NJ: A man trying to stop a violent dog fight was mauled to death after three pit bulls suddenly turned on him, authorities said.

The attack happened near the Georgia King Village housing complex, where the victim reportedly saw the dogs fighting and stepped in to break it up.

Officials say the animals, believed to belong to someone the victim knew, quickly redirected their aggression toward him and attacked as a group.

The man was able to briefly break free but suffered severe injuries and lost consciousness shortly after.

Responding officers arrived to find the victim critically wounded. He was pronounced dead at the scene just after 9 p.m., roughly 30 minutes after the attack.

Animal Control also responded, though authorities have not yet confirmed what happened to the dogs.

The incident remains under investigation.
