The search for a missing 10-year-old girl in the Passaic River ended in tragedy Friday evening after first responders recovered her body, bringing a heartbreaking close to a days-long search that had gripped the Passaic community.
The girl had been missing since Wednesday after three children entered the river near Dundee Island Park. That same night, a 10-year-old boy lost his life after reportedly pushing his sister toward safety, allowing her to reach shore before he was swept away.
Passaic Mayor Hector Lora confirmed the girlβs body was recovered Friday following an extensive search involving local, county, and state emergency agencies. According to emergency radio traffic, a civilian first spotted the victim, prompting a large emergency response. Her body was ultimately recovered near Veterans Court.
For nearly three days, family members, neighbors, volunteers, and first responders held onto hope for a different outcome. Instead, the city is now mourning the loss of two young lives.
Our hearts are with the childrenβs family, and the entire Passaic community during this unimaginable loss πππΎ
