Newark Mayor Ras Baraka is once again calling for the closure of Delaney Hall after the death of Edwin Jovanny Lopez Cornejo, who died while in ICE custody at the Newark detention facility.
In a statement released Monday, Baraka said the death is "another heartbreaking reminder" of what he described as a lack of oversight, accountability, and transparency at Delaney Hall. He accused GEO Group and ICE of repeatedly failing to protect the health, safety, and dignity of detainees and renewed his demand for the facility to be shut down.
The mayor also extended his condolences to Lopez Cornejo's family, saying no one should lose their life while in custody.
