WOODLAND PARK, NJ — A tragic scene unfolded Monday afternoon after a longtime crossing guard was struck and killed while helping children cross the street, authorities said.
According to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, the crash happened around 3:35 p.m. at the intersection of McBride Avenue and Lackawanna Avenue.
Officials say an 80-year-old female crossing guard was assisting two juveniles across the roadway when all three were hit by a vehicle.
The crossing guard, a Woodland Park resident, was rushed to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.
The two children were also hospitalized and are expected to survive.
Authorities said the driver remained at the scene as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
