A New Jersey woman is facing serious charges after police say she tried to perform a root canal without a dental license β€” and couldn’t finish the job.

According to South River police, the patient scheduled an appointment with Ana C. Amato, 49, of Old Bridge, after seeing her advertise dental services in a WhatsApp group chat.

The man agreed to pay $1,000 for the procedure.

Police say when he arrived at an office in South River on Sept. 22, Amato allegedly injected his gums with anesthetic, drilled into his tooth, and began the root canal.

Then the procedure suddenly stopped.

Investigators say Amato told the patient to come back later that week β€” but before the follow-up appointment, she allegedly informed him she couldn’t complete the work and gave him a list of legitimate dentists who could finish the job.

When the man returned asking for his $300 deposit back, police say Amato refused β€” sparking an argument.

Days later, the patient showed up at the police station with gauze in his mouth and still bleeding, prompting officers to open an investigation.

Detectives later determined Amato was not licensed to practice dentistry at all.

Police say cases like this are becoming more common as people advertise medical services through social media and messaging apps.

Amato was arrested and charged with:

β€’ Unlawful practice of dentistry
β€’ Aggravated assault
β€’ Financial facilitation of criminal activity

β€œWhat began as a routine dispute call demonstrated why thorough police work matters,” South River Police Chief Mark Tinitigan said.

Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators.
