A Newark man employed as a security guard for the Newark Board of Education has been arrested after allegedly traveling to North Bergen to meet someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl for a sexual encounter, according to the North Bergen Police Department.
In a press release issued Friday, North Bergen police identified the suspect as Jeffrey B. Sanders of Newark. Authorities said Sanders was arrested on Thursday, July 16, following an investigation into the attempted luring and enticement of a child.
According to police, officers responded to a residential complex at approximately 11:05 p.m. after receiving a report that an individual had arrived to meet a juvenile. Investigators said electronic communications and other digital evidence indicated Sanders had spent several weeks communicating with someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl before traveling to North Bergen for a sexual encounter.
Police said Sanders admitted during the investigation that he traveled to meet the person he believed was the child for a sexual act. Authorities also allege he admitted to sending sexually explicit photographs and videos, engaging in sexually explicit conversations, and told investigators he was employed as a security guard for the Newark Board of Education assigned to an elementary school.
According to the department, Sanders also made statements regarding the alleged possession of suspected child sexual abuse material, leading investigators to pursue additional investigative actions.
Sanders has been charged with luring or enticing a child, attempted sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and related offenses.
