The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. on March 28 at a Walgreens on Ferry Street, according to officials.

Police say the suspect walked into the store with a woman and four children and began taking merchandise. As the group tried to leave, a security guard confronted them.

That’s when things escalated.

As they were being escorted out, a store employee stepped in to help. Investigators say the suspect suddenly pulled out a knife and swung, slashing the employee’s hand before taking off westbound on Ferry Street.

The suspect is described as a known shoplifter, authorities said.

The injured employee is expected to be okay.
