What began as a celebration of new beginnings ended in chaos and loss on the first morning of 2024.

At 1:56 a.m. on January 1st, emergency crews from Plainsboro, West Windsor, and surrounding towns rushed to the scene of a horrific multi-car crash on Route 1.

By the time sirens filled the night sky, six vehicles were mangled across the highway — and 25-year-old Louisa Bradlow Carman of Princeton lay critically injured. She was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, but despite lifesaving efforts, she was later pronounced dead.

💥 The Chain of Chaos
Authorities say it all began when a Nissan Altima, driven by Cianni Hall, 24, of Delran, slammed into Louisa’s Ford Fusion, disabling it in the middle of a travel lane.

Six minutes later—six minutes that could’ve saved a life—a Chevrolet Impala driven by Adriana Vega, 27, of Trenton, crashed into the stalled vehicle… and then fled the scene.

But it didn’t end there.

A third collision followed: a Chevy Malibu driven by Kartika Shorter, 44, of Trenton, struck a Volkswagen Tiguan carrying a man, a woman, and two children. A Good Samaritan who had stopped to help was also hit in the wreckage.

🚔 The Aftermath: Arrests and Charges

What unfolded was more than a tragic accident — it was a web of reckless decisions:

  • Adriana Vega: Fled the scene and now faces first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter, Vehicular Homicide, and Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident.

  • Kartika Shorter: Accused of driving under the influence. Charged with 4 counts of Assault by Auto, Endangering 2 children, and Endangering another person.

  • Cianni Hall: Also driving under the influence. Charged with Endangering Another Person.

  • Zyira Dixon, 25, of Trenton: Charged with Attempted Escape and Obstruction.

  • Glover (identity partially withheld): Charged with Hindering, Obstruction, and Attempted Escape.

🔍 The investigation, led by Corporal Justin Kowalczyk (Plainsboro PD) and Detective James Alleva (Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office), is still ongoing.

🕯️ A young life was lost. Multiple families are forever changed. And the New Year began with heartbreak on Route 1.
