Two Newark women were killed after a tractor-trailer overturned onto their car Tuesday morning on Interstate 78 in Newark, according to New Jersey State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 9:08 a.m. on I-78 East near milepost 56.8 in Essex County.
According to a preliminary investigation, a Mack tractor hauling a utility trailer was traveling eastbound when it approached a Chevrolet sedan stopped in traffic in the left lane.
State Police said the driver of the Mack attempted an evasive steering maneuver before the truck overturned onto the Chevrolet.
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 42-year-old Ayesha Wright of Newark, and her passenger, 25-year-old Kendra Rouse of Newark, suffered fatal injuries.
The driver of the Mack tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by New Jersey State Police. No additional information was immediately available.
