An alaska airlines 737 and a fedex 777 cargo plane nearly collided while landing on intersecting runways at newark liberty, according to flight data. The scare happened around 8:17 p.m. Tuesday as the alaska flight came in from portland and the fedex plane approached from memphis. 🚨 just seconds before touchdown — and only about 150 feet above the ground — air traffic control ordered the alaska plane to abort and go around. At the same time, the fedex jet continued landing on the crossing runway. Preliminary data shows the two aircraft were separated by just 300–325 feet. A former faa official says the issue likely came down to timing on newark’s intersecting runways — a known challenge for controllers — adding the go-around call may have come “too late.” ✈️ the faa says go-arounds are a routine safety measure and is now investigating the incident. ⚠️ this comes just two weeks after another close call, when a singapore airlines plane clipped a parked spirit airlines aircraft at newark
