Authorities in Bergen County have arrested Tobias Aparicio Cruz, 55, of Bogota, following a late-night crash in Teaneck that left a pedestrian hospitalized with serious injuries.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the charges, saying the arrest followed a joint investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Teaneck Police Department.

According to officials, the incident happened around 11:16 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, when Teaneck Police responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a pedestrian struck on Cedar Lane near Teaneck Cinemas.

When officers arrived, they determined a 2005 Nissan Sentra, driven by Aparicio Cruz, struck a 53-year-old Teaneck man.

The victim was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with serious injuries, where he remains hospitalized.

Police say Aparicio Cruz was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Due to the severity of the injuries, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit responded and launched a joint investigation with local authorities.

As a result of that investigation, Aparicio Cruz was formally charged with:

• Third-degree assault by auto
• Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)
• Additional related traffic offenses

He was transported to the Bergen County Jail and is awaiting his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.

The investigation remains ongoing.
