BROOKLYN MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER IN NEW JERSEY DRUG ROBBERY GONE WRONG
A Somerset County jury convicted 45-year-old Daniel Matthews of Brooklyn, New York, of first-degree murder and other charges in the 2023 killing of Franklin Township resident Artis Timothy Young. Â
After a two-week trial, the jury delivered its verdict on March 3, 2025. Matthews faces a possible life sentence at his April 25 sentencing. Â
Authorities say the murder occurred on December 29, 2023, during a robbery at Matthews’ family home in Franklin Township involving a large quantity of marijuana. Â
Young was reported missing the next day. Investigators later determined he had planned to meet Matthews that evening. In the early hours of December 30, Young’s body was found in Brooklyn, where the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide by ligature strangulation. Â
Prosecutors identified Matthews and Andrew Mumby as suspects, revealing that after the murder, they transported Young’s body in the trunk of his own car before abandoning it in Brooklyn. Surveillance footage showed them with the vehicle over 12 hours, with Matthews frequently handling cleaning supplies. Â
Forensic evidence confirmed Young’s blood and DNA in the car’s trunk, on Matthews’ garage floor, and on a sweatsuit Matthews wore in surveillance footage. Matthews’ DNA was also found mixed with Young’s blood on the clothing. Â
A witness testified the killing was tied to a marijuana-related robbery. Â
Mumby has pleaded guilty, while Matthews awaits sentencing.
