People came out Monday night with candles to remember a young man killed seven years ago. The vigil ended with five more people shot on an Elizabeth street.
Gunfire broke out around 9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, near Irvington Avenue and Elmwood Place, the Union County Prosecutor's Office said. Officers found five people with gunshot wounds. One was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other four were taken to a hospital, prosecutors said.
The crowd had gathered for Jamile Robbins, a 20-year-old who was fatally shot in the same neighborhood in late October 2019. A gathering meant to mourn one shooting victim ended in another shooting. Neighbors said the gunfire first sounded like fireworks. A van appeared to have been hit several times, and bullet holes could be seen in some nearby homes.
As of Tuesday, prosecutors had made no arrests and released no motive, and no update had been released as of Wednesday. The person killed and the four who were wounded have not been publicly identified. The prosecutor's Homicide Task Force and Elizabeth police are investigating.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward. Anonymous tips can be called in to 908-654-TIPS (8477) or submitted at uctip.org, and tips that lead to an indictment and conviction may be eligible for a reward of up to $10,000. JerseyTalks will update this story when the victims are identified or charges are filed.
