‘GOLD BAR BOB’ REPORTS TO PRISON: EX-SEN. MENENDEZ BEGINS 11-YEAR SENTENCE
Former U.S. Senator Bob Menendez reported to federal prison Tuesday to begin serving an 11-year sentence for accepting bribes in the form of gold bars, cash, and luxury perks.
The 71-year-old Democrat, once chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, surrendered to FCI Schuylkill in Pennsylvania, where he’s expected to serve time at the facility’s minimum-security camp.
Menendez was convicted of using his political influence to help New Jersey businessmen and Egyptian officials in exchange for bribes — including $480,000 in cash, gold worth $150,000, and a Mercedes convertible. He resigned from the Senate shortly after the verdict.
Menendez maintains his innocence, recently aligning with Donald Trump’s attacks on the justice system and hinting at a potential pardon bid.
His wife, Nadine Menendez, was also convicted and is set to be sentenced in September.
“Despite decades of service, he’s now known more widely as Gold Bar Bob,” his lawyer said.
