A fan in the stands at Prudential Center caught the pregame atmosphere before the Devils hosted the Rangers, panning across a packed lower bowl decked out in red and black, with the arena's video board running warmups and the matchup graphic overhead. Her verdict, on screen for the whole clip: "Hockey greater than football."
Devils and Rangers games always carry an edge, two fan bases fifteen miles apart who genuinely do not like each other, and this season opener at Prudential Center brought out the full range of it: Devils red mixed in with Rangers blue throughout the crowd, everybody there for the same reason.
