UNION CITY, NJ — It took months, but an arrest has finally been made in a deadly hit-and-run that shook Union City.

Authorities say 42-year-old Tomas Amelcolima, of West New York, is now facing serious charges after investigators tied him to the crash that killed 83-year-old Fabiola Bedoya.

The incident happened back on December 27, just before 6 p.m., near 30th Street and Palisades Avenue.

Police arrived to find Bedoya badly injured in the roadway. The driver was already gone.

She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Now, months into the investigation, the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit says they’ve identified the driver and made an arrest.

Amelcolima was taken into custody at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City and is now being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility, awaiting his first court appearance.

He’s charged with death by auto and knowingly leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.

The investigation is still ongoing.
