🛑 MAJOR RECALL: MIDEA U & U+ WINDOW AIR CONDITIONERS

🛑 MAJOR RECALL: MIDEA U & U+ WINDOW AIR CONDITIONERS

On June 5, 2025, Midea America Corp., in coordination with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (cpsc.gov), issued a voluntary recall of approximately 1.7 million U‑ and U+‑shaped window air conditioners, alongside nearly 46,000 units sold in Canada

What’s the Problem?

The U‑shaped design of these air conditioners can trap pooled water, which may overflow or stagnate—leading to mold growth. So far, 152 reports of mold buildup have surfaced, including 17 confirmed cases of respiratory distress, allergies, coughing, sneezing, or sore throat.

Models and Brands Affected

The recall encompasses models across 8 000–12 000 BTU capacities sold under various brand names:

  • Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire

  • Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool

  • Perfect Aire, Sea Breeze

These units were available between March 2020 and May 2025 for $280–$500, sold at major retailers like Costco, Home Depot, Best Buy, and online stores including Amazon

What You Need to Do

Consumers who own these air conditioners are urged to take action immediately:

  1. Contact Midea to arrange a:

    • Free repair (drain plug installation or repair kit delivery), or

    • Full or prorated refund based on purchase date

  2. For refunds: either return the unit using a prepaid shipping label or send a photo of the unplugged unit with the cord cut.

  3. If waiting for a repair: follow guidance on how to inspect and clean the unit before resuming use

How to Identify Affected Units

  • Check the brand name, model number, and size (22×14 inches) on the unit’s label.

  • Compare with the official lists provided by the CPSC and Midea

Health & Safety Concerns

Exposure to mold from these units can trigger respiratory issues, allergic reactions, or throat irritation—particularly problematic for individuals with asthma, allergies, or compromised immunity
