WRONG-WAY DISASTER: POLICE CHASE IN WEST DEPTFORD ENDS WITH UBER DRIVER’S DEATH
The driver killed in Sunday’s crash in West Deptford was working for Uber, according to the mother of one of the injured passengers.
Authorities say Steve Hall, 28, of the United Kingdom, was fleeing police when he caused the deadly wrong-way crash that left several others seriously hurt. Hall faces second-degree death by auto and two counts of fourth-degree assault by auto, the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Police were called to a local gas station for reports of two intoxicated men inside a vehicle. As officers arrived, Hall allegedly sped off. Moments later, he crossed into oncoming traffic and struck another car head-on.
The Uber driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A rear-seat passenger suffered a broken femur and tibia and underwent surgery, while Hall and his passenger also sustained serious injuries.
Authorities have not said whether Hall was intoxicated. He remains held at the Salem County Correctional Facility; no attorney information was listed in court records as of Wednesday.
