Cranford Township Meeting Erupts into Chaos After Purple Bong Costume, Songs, and Arrest

If you think local government is boring, Cranford had other plans.
A Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, July 7, quickly spiraled into one of New Jersey's most viral moments of the week after public comment featured a man dressed in a giant purple bong costume, singing, fake baby props, and ultimately police intervention.
Video posted by Cranford TV 35 shows one speaker, identifying himself as "Bongholeo," addressing officials while wearing the oversized costume, breaking into song, and using a baby doll as part of his presentation. The bizarre scene drew laughter online as clips spread across social media.
The meeting became more tense when another speaker refused repeated requests to end their remarks. After several warnings from the dais, officers stepped in to remove the individual, leading to an arrest captured on video.
In a statement released July 8, the Cranford Police Department said officers were assigned to the meeting to help maintain order and enforce the township's public participation rules. Police said multiple attendees disrupted the meeting through singing, shouting, and other conduct that exceeded the township's guidelines, which generally limit speakers to five minutes.
Township rules allow officials to regulate public comment when meetings become disruptive, a reminder that behind the viral clips was an official public meeting where residents were attempting to conduct township business.
