FORMER WILDWOOD MAYOR PLEADS GUILTY TO HEALTH BENEFITS FRAUD

Former Wildwood Mayor Peter J. Byron has pleaded guilty to fraudulently enrolling in the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) and failing to disclose outside employment. Byron admitted to theft by unlawful taking, falsifying records, and filing a fraudulent tax return during a hearing before a New Jersey Superior Court Judge. He will face a recommended sentence of three years in state prison, pay restitution, and be banned from public office. Byron's participation in SHBP was illegal as he was not a full-time employee, costing the state over $600,000 in premiums and claims. He also failed to report income from an undisclosed job, leading to additional charges. The plea resolves two indictments against Byron.
