JOSE MELO, ELIZABETH MAN WITH PRIOR CONVICTION, CHARGED WITH KILLING HIS FIANCE
A 52-year-old Elizabeth man with a history of violent offenses has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing earlier this week, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, Elizabeth Police Chief Giacomo Sacca, and Elizabeth Police Director Earl Graves announced.
Jose Melo, who was previously convicted in 2010 for threatening a woman with a box cutter and sexually assaulting her, now faces charges of first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
The latest incident occurred on Monday, December 30, 2024, at approximately 9:12 a.m., when Elizabeth Police officers responded to a residence on Florida Street following a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Naket Jadix Trinidad Maldonado, also of Elizabeth, dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details were immediately available.
