LUNCHROOM CHAOS: TEEN STABBED AT WAYNE SCHOOL, CLASSMATE FACING AGGRAVATED ASSAULT CHARGES
A cafeteria dispute at a special education school in Wayne turned violent Monday afternoon when an 18-year-old student allegedly stabbed a 14-year-old classmate multiple times, authorities said.
Wayne police responded to Lakeview Learning Center on Van Duyne Avenue around 12:38 p.m. on May 19 after receiving reports of a stabbing on school grounds.
Officers found the younger student suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest and bleeding heavily. While some officers rendered immediate medical aid, others located the suspect in the lower level of the school and took him into custody. The weapon believed to have been used in the attack—a knife—was recovered at the scene.
Emergency responders from Saint Joseph’s Health arrived quickly to assist, and the victim was rushed to Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson by the Wayne Memorial First Aid Squad. As of the latest update, the teen remained in surgery.
Police say the incident was sparked by a verbal altercation between the two students during lunch. Staff intervened quickly to break up the fight and implement emergency protocols, including shelter-in-place procedures.
The suspect, identified as Rayshawn Christian, 18, of Elizabeth, has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Possession of a Weapon on School Property. He remains in custody and is awaiting transfer to the Passaic County Jail Intake Hub.
Authorities have not released further updates on the victim’s condition or whether additional charges may be forthcoming.
