NEWARK NOW ALLOWS 16-YEAR-OLDS TO VOTE IN SCHOOL BOARD RACES
Newark's City Council approved a local law lowering the voting age to 16 for school board elections, making it the first municipality in New Jersey to do so. The decision followed advocacy from the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and received support from students and voting rights advocates.
Gov. Phil Murphy also signaled support for statewide expansion of voting rights for 16 and 17-year-olds in school board elections. Some council members expressed interest in further extending voting rights to undocumented immigrants.
The city aims to implement the change by the next April school board race, pending necessary preparations. The move has both supporters and skeptics among residents. Some people claim that democrats are interested in lowering the age to overturn parents' votes with the raising concerns of over-sexualizing the classrooms. And that Taxpayers should be deciding on how their money should be spent.
Award winning Journalist, Dr. Fernando Uribe, spoke briefly during his last week's show, REAL TALK WITH Fernando Uribe, “Newark should focus on upbringing their student educational level, this is a more important issue to tackle.”
