A Newark teacher is being recognized as one of the best in Essex County.

Carla Ferreira, an English teacher at the Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design, was named Essex County Teacher of the Year this week during a New Jersey Department of Education ceremony in Ewing.

Ferreira is a Newark native and published poet who is heading into her 11th year in education. She joined Newark Public Schools last year during the architecture school’s first year.

Her résumé is impressive — with degrees from Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge and Rutgers — but district officials pointed just as much to what she has been doing inside the classroom.

Newark Public Schools says Ferreira has focused on helping students become stronger readers and writers while creating a classroom where multilingual students and children of immigrants feel represented and supported.

She has also used independent reading and Socratic seminars to get students talking, questioning and building confidence in their own ideas.

Superintendent Roger León said Ferreira’s recognition reflects the work happening across Newark classrooms, while Board President Hasani K. Council highlighted her commitment to immigrant students and children of immigrants.

Ferreira said she hopes the honor gives her a bigger platform to advocate for students who are often the most vulnerable.
