A political disagreement on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk has led to criminal charges after police say an adult allegedly assaulted a teenage girl during the confrontation.

According to Point Pleasant Beach Police Chief Robert Kowalewski, the incident happened on the evening of July 3 after a 33-year-old woman confronted a teenage girl over patriotic-colored sweatpants displaying a message supporting President Donald Trump.

Investigators allege the woman yelled at the teen before striking her once on the body and once in the face with an open hand. Police said the suspect left the area before officers were able to identify her.

Police later identified the suspect as Kaitlyn E. Tracey, 33, of Allenhurst. She was arrested on July 13 and charged with simple assault, endangering the welfare of a child, harassment, and obstruction.

The charges are allegations, and Tracey is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The investigation was assisted by the Asbury Park Police Department, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, the Toronto Police Service, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

While the confrontation reportedly began over a political message on the teen's clothing, the case now centers on allegations that an adult physically assaulted a minor. Police have not announced any additional arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
