🚨 No Wallet? No Problem. New Jersey Is Going Digital — Starting with Your Driver’s License.
What happened
📱 Governor Phil Murphy has signed a new law that will bring mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) to smartphones across the Garden State. That means your ID will soon live right next to your credit cards — all in your phone.
Here’s what you need to know:
-
The NJ Motor Vehicle Commission has up to 6 years to roll out the digital license program.
-
Physical licenses will still be available for those who prefer a traditional card.
-
The digital option will be completely voluntary.
🛂 The law also includes strong privacy protections:
-
You can’t be forced to hand over your phone to verify ID — not even by police.
-
Displaying your digital ID does not give permission to search your phone.
-
Strict limits are in place to prevent tracking, data sharing, or unauthorized access.
🗺️ New Jersey joins 15 states + Puerto Rico that already offer digital licenses. 10 more states + D.C. are on the way.
Governor Murphy says:
“Digital driver's licenses will make life easier for drivers across New Jersey.”
The future of your wallet? Just your phone.
No card. No clutter. No kidding.
