ASBURY PARK, NJ: Possible drowning under investigation after woman pulled from water

Authorities are investigating a possible drowning at an Asbury Park beach after emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday.

Officials have not released details about the victim or her condition as of Sunday.

Witnesses say a woman was pulled from the water and given CPR on the beach until EMS arrived.

As warmer weather brings more people to the shore, officials are warning beachgoers to stay out of the water. Lifeguards are not on duty yet and typically do not return until Memorial Day weekend.

According to Asbury Park lifeguard Joe Bongiovanni, the danger is not just waves. It is the cold.

Water temperatures in the 50s can quickly lead to hypothermia.

“If your body temperature is 98.6, and you go in 50-degree water, within minutes your core body temperature starts to drop. You become hypothermic.”

Bottom line:
Early-season beach swims can turn dangerous fast, even on warm days.
