TRUMP, FIRST FOR A U.S. PRESIDENT, FOUND GUILTY ON ALL 34 COUNTS IN HUSH MONEY TRIAL
A New York jury found former President Donald Trump guilty of 34 felony charges for falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. This historic verdict makes Trump the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime. Sentencing is scheduled for July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention, where Trump is set to be confirmed as the GOP's presidential nominee. He remains free without bail and could face up to four years in prison for each count.
Trump showed a calm demeanor during the verdict, while his son Eric appeared angry. The jury deliberated for less than 10 hours over two days. The charges stem from Trump reimbursing his then-lawyer Michael Cohen for the $130,000 payment to Daniels to keep her quiet about an alleged affair. Trump is also dealing with three other criminal cases related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election and retention of classified documents. Additionally, he owes over $450 million in a business fraud civil case and nearly $90 million in defamation verdicts to writer E. Jean Carroll, all of which he is appealing.
