WEST NEW YORK TAKES DOWN MENENDEZ NAME AT PS# 3 SCHOOL
Officials in West New York, New Jersey, removed U.S. Senator Bob Menendez's name from a local school following his conviction on federal bribery charges.
The school, formerly named Robert Menendez Elementary, reverted to its original name, PS #3, before the school year began. Menendez, 70, was convicted earlier in the month and planned to resign from the Senate on August 20, with sentencing set for late October.
The school was named after Menendez in 2013 by then-Mayor Felix Roque. There is precedent for removing names of convicted officeholders from public buildings, such as the Harrison A. Williams, Jr. Metropark train station, which took years to have his name removed after his 1981 bribery conviction.
