A dead fox found in Middletown last week has tested positive for rabies, township officials announced Tuesday.

The fox was first reported acting sick near Brushwood Point along Hartshorne Road in the Rumson and Navesink section. Last Thursday, park rangers located the carcass inside Hartshorne Woods Park and turned it over to Middletown Animal Control.

The animal was sent to a state lab for testing. Results came back positive Tuesday.

Officials are reminding residents not to approach or handle wildlife and to make sure all pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations. Animals should not be allowed to roam off leash, even in wooded areas, to avoid contact with potentially infected wildlife.

Rabies is a fatal disease that spreads through bites or contact with saliva.

If you see a sick or injured animal, call Middletown Animal Control at 732-615-2097 or contact police after hours at 732-615-2100. Anyone who may have been exposed should seek medical attention immediately. Pet owners should contact a veterinarian if their animal had contact with wildlife.
