Another Round of Heavy Rain Triggers Flash Flooding Across Parts of New Jersey
What happened
Another round of torrential rain flooded roads and stranded vehicles across parts of New Jersey on Thursday, July 9, as days of relentless storms continued to soak the state.
The National Weather Service warned throughout the day that heavy rainfall could trigger localized flash flooding, particularly in communities already saturated by earlier storms this week.
By Thursday night, severe thunderstorm and flood watches had expired, but not before flooding was reported across Central and South Jersey.
Among the hardest-hit areas were New Brunswick, Edison, Matawan, Keyport, and Camden. According to ABC7, floodwaters covered streets in Matawan, submerged portions of Route 1 in Edison, and left several vehicles stranded in high water in New Brunswick. In Camden, 6abc reported rapidly rising floodwaters near Second and Pine streets Thursday afternoon as another flash flood warning remained in effect.
The threat isn't over yet.
Forecasters say additional showers and thunderstorms are expected Friday into Saturday, with the potential for more heavy rainfall and renewed flash flooding across parts of New Jersey.
Officials continue to urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways, reminding the public that the majority of flood-related deaths occur when vehicles attempt to drive through high water.
