Everything keeps going up… except our paychecks.
Starting today, NJ Transit riders are paying 3% more to get around the state. The increase affects buses, trains, light rail, and monthly passes, marking the second consecutive year of fare hikes after last year’s 15% increase. Under the current policy, fares are scheduled to rise another 3% every July unless the board changes course.
For many commuters, the higher price comes with a familiar question: what’s actually getting better? Riders continue to report delays, reliability issues, overcrowded trains, and rising commuting costs.
The increase also arrives as New Jersey is in the global spotlight. With multiple FIFA World Cup matches taking place at MetLife Stadium, NJ Transit is expected to move thousands of fans throughout the tournament, putting even more attention on the system’s performance.
NJ Transit says the increase is needed to address long-running financial pressures, including lower post-pandemic ridership, higher operating costs, and the end of federal pandemic relief funding.
The new fares are already in effect, so commuters should check updated ticket prices before traveling. Now the focus shifts to whether riders will see meaningful improvements that match the higher cost.
