NJ Transit Riders Hit with Another Fare Hike July 1
What happened
NJ Transit riders are about to pay more.
Starting July 1, fares will rise 3% systemwide for bus, rail, light rail, and monthly passes. The increase follows the larger 2024 fare hike and comes under NJ Transit's annual adjustment policy, unless the board changes course.
For commuters, this is another affordability hit at a time when many households are already stretched.
NJ Transit has pointed to several pressures: ridership still around 80% of pre-pandemic levels, nearly $2 billion in lost fare revenue since 2020, rising costs, and pandemic aid that has been exhausted.
The timing also matters beyond the daily commute. New Jersey is trying to prove it can move massive World Cup crowds through the Meadowlands and Secaucus without chaos.
So the state is asking riders to pay more while also asking the transit system to perform under a global spotlight.
