ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — TWO ATLANTIC CITY POLICE OFFICERS WERE SHOT WHILE SERVING A SEARCH WARRANT TUESDAY AFTERNOON, LEAVING ONE OFFICER SERIOUSLY INJURED AND A SUSPECT DEAD. AUTHORITIES IDENTIFIED THE INJURED OFFICER AS SWAT SERGEANT CHRISTIAN IVANOV, A FATHER OF THREE AND LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS OWNER. IVANOV REMAINS HOSPITALIZED IN SERIOUS BUT STABLE CONDITION. ATLANTIC CITY MAYOR MARTY SMALL SR. SAID ONE OF THE OFFICERS WAS PROTECTED BY A HELMET DURING THE INCIDENT, CREDITING IT WITH POTENTIALLY SAVING A LIFE. THE SECOND OFFICER SUFFERED NON-LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES AND HAS SINCE BEEN RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL. THE SHOOTING UNFOLDED AROUND 3 P.M. AS OFFICERS EXECUTED A SEARCH WARRANT IN ATLANTIC CITY. DURING THE OPERATION, A MALE SUSPECT WAS SHOT AND LATER DIED. OFFICIALS HAVE NOT RELEASED THE SUSPECT'S IDENTITY OR DISCLOSED WHAT LED TO THE GUNFIRE. NEIGHBORS EXPRESSED CONCERN FOLLOWING THE VIOLENCE, THOUGH AUTHORITIES EMPHASIZED THERE IS NO ONGOING THREAT TO THE PUBLIC. THE NEW JERSEY ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE IS LEADING THE INVESTIGATION, WHICH IS STANDARD PROCEDURE IN POLICE-INVOLVED SHOOTINGS.
